Divya Saini’s obsession with vintage clothing led to the conceptualisation of Bodements – a boutique based out of Mumbai and Paris, curating upcycled clothing and hand-sourced vintage from around the world that transcends boundaries of time.

In a quaint vintage store tucked away in the sinewy lanes of Paris, the idea of Bodements first came into being in Divya Saini’s mind on a ‘self-discovery’ trip through Europe. Spending hours listlessly devouring vintage pieces in stores, she’d gathered a sizable collection packed into overflowing suitcases by the time her trip came to a close. Her love of strange silhouettes, exaggerated shoulders, and Victorian-style jackets was mirrored by followers on Instagram who flooded her DMs wanting to know where she got her clothes – and so dawned the realisation that there was a dearth, and demand, for inimitable vintage clothing in India.

Bodements, meaning ‘prophecy or prediction’ has done a fair share of fortune-telling about the future of the vintage fashion market in India. Sourcing from markets across Europe, The United States, and South Africa, the boutique embodies the mentality of slow consumption and provides a loving new home to clothing that carries history.

In a cursory scroll through their website, you’ll find garments spanning from a 1980s teal Jacquard boxy jacket to corsets and co-ords upcycled from deadstock sarees scattered through Indian markets. When this jacket is worn over pleated dresses upcycled from old sarees, draped together to create the illusion of a two-toned skirt, teal finds timelessness.

A red jacket created by a self-taught French designer named Louis Féraud who ran a fashion boutique in Cannes in the 1950s with his wife Zizi is presently reborn when styled over straight-cut denim jeans, pointy-toed stilettos and white lace fingerless gloves. The love affair that erupts when vintage fashion meets the everyday, modern casual.

Custom made entirely from an old saree, a printed co-ord set preserves the nostalgia and charm of the nine yards in a convenient, wearable format.

A striking cobalt blue ensemble from Paris in the 1980s was a sign of its times. As more women took up professional employment, the silhouette of wide shoulders and assertive lines common in men’s clothing was adapted to suit popular sensibilities. While its original styling remains intact, the traditionalism of the erstwhile skirt suit and its gold accents is broken with a geometric patterned glove.

Sitting snugly beside the ‘put-togetherness’ of the blue Parisienne ensemble is the playfulness supplied by a pop-coloured abstract jacket from the 1990s, layered over orange pants, a striped skirt, and black-white mismatched shoes. A riot in all the right and wrong ways, the monotonous myth of vintage fashion looking a certain way is dispelled.

With no stringent guardrails of look and feel in curation, Bodements brings together pieces from across decades with the sole consideration of them being striking and outlasting volatile trends. A damaged Escada jacket takes the form of a cropped jacket and skirt set with string detailing when upcycled – a visual commentary on the life cycle of clothing.

Offsetting the maximalism of a gold brocade jacket with sheer black tights and gloves ensures that attention is diverted to the centrepiece in all its glory. Contrasting cowboy boots catch the viewer’s eye momentarily, but the vintage collectible carries the storytelling on its back.
